The music of the Metin Yilmaz Quartet featuring the mystical voice of the Bilûr/Kaval, the ancient flute of Metin’s homeland. Joined by piano, double bass, and drums, the Quartet weaves microtonal scales and Anatolian modes into intricate rhythmic landscapes, where contemporary sensibilities meet timeless tradition. Their sound is at once soulful and exploratory, shaped by meditative improvisations and innovative jazz language that drift between the spiritual and the modern. • Metin Yilmaz – Bilûr/Kaval (Traditional Flute) • Jodie Michael – Drums • Matt McMahon – Piano • Stephen Elphick – Double Bass. Melodious Indian classical ragas, brought to life on the Santoor—a shimmering 100-string instrument seldom heard live in Australia. We are honoured to host Vinay Desai, visiting from the USA, who received guidance from the legendary Padma Bhushan Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, the pioneer who introduced the Santoor to the global stage. Indian classical ragas are revered for their healing and transformative effects, traditionally performed to calm the mind, balance emotions, and elevate inner awareness. A rare chance to hear fascinating chamber works for baryton by Joseph Haydn, performed with their intended instrumentation. The baryton, an instrument similar to a bass viol but with an extra course of metal sympathetic strings, was an 18th-century instrument favoured by Haydn's longtime employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy. Haydn composed over 130 works for it. These delightful works are full of invention, wit and colour, with the unique combination of low instruments creating unique and beautiful sonority.
